Copy of HISTORY OF HUMANISM

Humanism has a long tradition that has inspired many scientists, artists and musicians. The earliest written record of humanist philosophy originated in ancient Greece thousands of years ago when philosophy turned to human beings rather than gods to solve human problems.

The fundamentals of modern humanism stem from 1952 and the first World Humanist Congress held in the Netherlands. The founders of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) drafted a resolution of universal humanist principles known as the Amsterdam Declaration.

In 2002, during the 50th anniversary, IHEU members passed an updated second resolution that was adopted by the IHEU General Assembly. This resolution became the official defining statement of humanism around the world.
